Posted by: MiceNow Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:47 pm
You all realize that this could be the thread that brings the forums down. LOLz!

Now, let's get this going and end this with a bang.

Posted by: Coral Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:47 pm
Her 15 minutes of fame are up !

Posted by: Armchair Critic Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:48 pm
Damn, my shows are on. I just know I am going to miss all the good stuff while I am offline.

Posted by: Slash Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:49 pm
Has anyone ever seen a picture?

Her Dawson's Creek recaps ruled. Dawson hate never gets old.

Posted by: slanderous Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:51 pm
Didn't Michelle Yeoh play her in http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111800/?

Posted by: MiceNow Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:52 pm
I saw a pic. I hear she has fat knees.

Posted by: Meenbean Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:53 pm
This is funny. Jesus, George W. Bush, and Wing Chun are now duking it out for top spot on the page.

Posted by: CagedRage Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:54 pm
And two of them can be easily compared to Hitler!

Posted by: Slash Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:55 pm
Well I don't bear a grudge, she's never disciplined me.

Step forward those who have. Share your stories of bondage and humiliation.

Posted by: Coral Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:55 pm
Her guest appearance on the Gilmore Girls sucked ! Total famewhore too .

Posted by: MiceNow Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:56 pm
And the scary thing about that, Meenbean? People seem to be afraid to come post in this thread and not the other two. ;)

Posted by: Naffy Mar 10, 2005 @ 7:58 pm
Well, I think this is the one thread that'll get the site killed. And I'm having WAY too much fun discussing the Jesus.

I'm pretty sure Jesus has a better sense of humour. And gives people second chances before he bans them.

http://www.wingchun.com/history.html was a great martial artist in a time when most women were disallowed from studying it. So, props from me.

She's a bona fide celebrity, y'all. She's author of a novel ... published and everything. I can't remember the title. But it was advertised on TWoP a few years ago.

There's a picture of her on the front cover.

For all the griping in other threads, I think she did a superior job with the moderating here. No one's perfect. Even on the best-run message boards, people often don't receive attentive or perfectly fair treatment in the interest of administrative efficiency. And that's unfortunate. Hurt feelings suck! Really. Maybe if there'd been separation of powers: administrative; legislative; judicial; therapeutic ..... it woulda been better.

I was oblivious to all the grievances bubbling underneath. Not that I'm shocked. Just never paid mind to the topic. All I saw was the result of the moderating, which was the (mostly) shellacked surface of these forums.

Posted by: Slash Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:26 pm
Has anyone actually read the book? Worth buying? Man, the reviews are kind of harsh.

Posted by: CagedRage Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:29 pm
Tara Ariano is one of the reasons that free speech is sometimes a bad idea. We should all be advocates of free speech.....for people that are worthy of our attention. Tara's work makes me hate her personally. That's sad.....for Tara......because she is worthless and deserves no credit.

Ouch.

Is that Wing's mug on the cover of that book ?

She totally isn't, she already said she's washed her hands of the site.

Or if she is reading this, Let the Bodies Hit the Floor

Pretty much.
Do you think she is even reading this?

Probably.
Do you think she has feelings?

Yep. I bet she feels like banning me right about now! ; )

Please don't, though, Wing. I beg you let me stay on until the lights go out.

Thirteen year old Wing I do believe. Recent pics anyone?

Posted by: Nikkei Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:37 pm
I've read part of it at Hissyfit, and yes, it's horrible. But that's the point - something I don't think the reviewers get.

Given the amount of enjoyment I get from her other work, the review that says she deserves no credit is particularly grating.

Posted by: Naffy Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:38 pm
She's author of a novel ... published and everything.

Published....by herself. No editor, no publicity, just pay-to-publish print-on-demand.

http://www.hissyfit.com/archives/2004/09/shorn.html is Wing, September last year.
http://www.hissyfit.com/archives/2005/03/aftershave.html is Glark, a couple of days ago, the crazy-eyed bastard (I kid. I always thought Glark was kind of like a nice, slightly henpecked uncle. Got no gripes against Glark).

No, all the posts on Hissyfit are not about haircuts.

Posted by: CoralFang Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:44 pm
I think it would be hilarious if the forums suddenly weren't closing anymore. The banning would be massive and there would be nobody left to post. Maybe this is all a ruse to clear out all of us riff-raff. A Wing Chun conspiracy.

Topic? Where does the name "Wing Chun" come from?

Posted by: Lefty Lucy Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:46 pm

Wasn't Wing in "Bitch" (heh) magazine a couple years ago pimping FT? I think her pic was in that article if anyone has a subscription.

In Wing's own words, "it doesn't matter any more", so yeah pretty much.

Glark's not what I expected. And Wing totally isn't. She's smiling!

Posted by: SummerofGeorge Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:49 pm

Slash, on the outside chance you're not being sarcastic- she won a gold medal in gymnastics at the 1984 Olympics.

And she looks like http://www.houstonpbs.org/flipflopshop/images/HoustonPBS%20site%20images/marylou.jpg.

Yes. "Writers Club Press" is with http://www.iuniverse.com/?self-publishing. See linkage http://www.writecontent.com/Publishing_Tools/Publishing_Links/Publishing_Links2/publishing_links2.html (last one listed under E-Publishing).

Also reference 2.4.2 http://www.nothingisreal.com/mentifex_faq.html (just me googling the name) for:

it is published by Writers Club Press, an imprint of iUniverse. Unlike conventional royalty-paying publishers, iUniverse is a vanity press that charges writers a fee in return for publishing their books. According to the price list on iUniverseís website, [it costs] at least $650 for the privilege of seeing [your] name in print.

Well, OK then! Thanks for setting me straight, Naffy.

Posted by: XanterraGirl Mar 10, 2005 @ 8:58 pm
Man, just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should.

I've got no beef with Wing. Yeah, she had her idiosyncracies and her little hypocrisies, but in general, she ran a fair group of forums. FT was the only place I posted on the internet, especially now that I have a real job that doesn't allow me to sit in front of my computer all day and pretend to work. Wing and Glark made this a pleasant place to interact with others. I'm grateful to them because before FT I'd lost my faith in communicating on the internet.

That said, Wing does look like Mary Lou Retton in that picture. Or maybe a little like Erin Moran. And Glark looks like Cha-chi! OMG!11!11!!!!

Posted by: Falafeloloofah Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:00 pm
Short haircuts don't work for most women, and she's one of them.

Posted by: CoralFang Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:03 pm
For the love of Glark, will someone please tell me why she calls herself "Wing Chun"? I am still curious 15 minutes after the last time I asked.

p.s. -I think Wing did a great job with the forums.

What wrong with publishing your own book? I don't think that's something you have to be ashamed of.

Posted by: Renny Sue Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:05 pm
I'm assuming its from the song that goes "everybody wing chun tonight"

Posted by: CoralFang Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:06 pm
If that's true, Renny Sue, I think a part of me just died.

Posted by: XanterraGirl Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:06 pm
Wasn't the whole point of her book the fact that it was a bad novel written by her fourteen year old self? She self-published as an adult for the hell of it; not because she thought it was The Greatest Work of Literature Ever.

But in the snarktastic world of publishing, self-publishing is akin to being Paris Hilton. It looks good but you wouldn't want to do it.

Posted by: bitpixie Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:06 pm

Oh, isn't Wing Chun a form of martial arts? There's a billboard here featuing "Wing Chun Master Somethingoranother". Maybe she practices it. Or maybe it was a metaphor because she karate chops FT into shape! Ok yeah that wasn't funny, but oh well.

I didn't say it was. I think the name "vanity press" fits, but I don't think it's something to be ashamed of. However, I think it's a vastly different animal than the usual connotations of being a "published author," which I think is a fair differentiation to make.

Posted by: Meenbean Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:27 pm
Yeah, I always thought it was Wing Chun from that really bad eighties song. It fits with the whole ironic bad eighties kitsch appreciation thing.

Personally, I always found the whole ironic (or is it really? See? You don't really know! That's so ironic!) appreciation/appropriation of really bad art from our childhood and adolescence a bit sad. I totally engage in it, of course, but I do so with the full knowledge that I'm sort of a pathetic wanker indulging in useless, unproductive nostalgia and passing it off as cleverness and wit. Just 'cause we're doing it "ironically" doesn't mean we're still not doing stupid things, like spending 30 bucks on a Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox on Ebay. Irony is such a dead end.

Oh my God, I'm totally bumming myself out as well as being completely off-topic! Quick, somebody be snarky and snap me out of it!

She ruled with an iron fist because she wanted these boards to be what she wanted them to be. Intelligent and filled with good grammar. And if she was a dictator and we were all scared of her (I know I was) that was the price we paid for this pretty unique site.

Posted by: Kaylee Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:52 pm

Posted by: CherryChapstick Mar 10, 2005 @ 9:56 pm
Sometimes she went a bit overboard, but for the most part she really did moderate the boards well. It's part of the reason that this is the only board I post at.

Wing has been absolutely kick-ass on these forums. They've been topical, generally respectful of posters, and they have sprawled beyond all comprehension -- I cannot even imagine the interface that I hope the moderators had for checking the topics; if they had to go through every topic one-by-one, I'm surprised they're not all dead.

I moderate message boards for a living, and my team dream of getting new jobs and never having to look at a gripe from a damn snotty and entitled user ever again. Moderators get tons of hate mail, tons of reregistered dickweeds, and rarely any credit. It is not the worst job in the world, but it is certainly one that attracts a stupid amount of pedants, timewasters and people who will repeatedly insist "I have the right of Freedom of Speech! I'm going to sue you!" What you actually see on the board is only scratching the surface.

As for her feelings upon reading this thread, if she's bothering at all -- people, I'm guessing she's immune to this by now. I certainly am when I get hate mail (which is what this thread largely seems to be). The most I do is look at the person who sent it, and then send it around to my colleagues and we all laugh at how utterly whiny and typical the message is for that particular poster. There is also eye-rolling.

Wing, this forum has been an absolute pleasure to visit. I enjoy your writing and will continue to come back to Fametracker to read new submissions. Enjoy the freedom from moderating, I envy you.

But don't talk too much about racism, because if it doesn't come topped with a white sheet it's not there. And don't get mad if misogynist posters insist that women are trapping male celebs by trying to get pregnant. And don't disagree with the unbelievably horrible things trollish posters say about female celebs, because if Wing doesn't like that female celeb she's fair game for anything. And remember, if you sleep with more than 3 men you're a whore. And if you disagree with her about the worth of Louis Vuitton purses, you'll get warned.

These boards used to be intelligent. Recently....nah, not so much.

So what you're saying is that you want Wing to moderate exactly to one person's specifications? Because there's totally not about six hundred other people out there who think she should moderate to their tastes, and have no problem telling her so. Should she kowtow to them as well?

To try and please everyone is anarchy. She made the calls, and most of the time the calls were good.

Posted by: Kaylee Mar 10, 2005 @ 10:11 pm

Me:"That's your opinion and not a fact."

I agree completely. It wouldn't have been nearly as lovely without any sort of guidelines. If you hated the moderation on this board, you really could have, y'know, started your own so you could do whatever you wanted THERE.

I'd rather have conversations stay polite, interesting, comprehensible, and on track. So kudos from Ron Burgundy.

Oh come on, it's people fooling around. Anyone would think we're ripping Wing to shreds. The farewell thread is far more full of petty grievances. Wing was the one that decided fuck this site, and no longer responded to requests for moderation.

Besides she does count as a celebrity, she has her book!

And, for the record, her moderation always worked for me.

No. But what I'm saying is that the moderation shouldn't be to her opinions on a given celebrity/brand/whatever, such as Kaylee's example above, which strikes me as the worst. Seriously, warning someone because they disagreed with her about Louis Vuitton?

Nope, I'm guessing that that was a warning because she sounds like she's getting twitty at the other poster. Am I right? No idea, have no clue where that snippet came from. But that's the glory of these moderation decisions -- the moderator often has a bit of a track record on that certain poster, and so can head things off at the pass. But then the poster only chooses to look at it from a single highlighted instance, and gets all wretched about it. "But I wasn't being snotty!" from a typical trouble poster usually has an unspoken "...yet" at the end.

Again, these boards have about the highest standard of ANY on the internet -- to the point that I have used them (and TWoP) as an example when trying to reform my company's messageboards.

Fluffystuff's partner worked on the set of Alias ... so she would frequently post juicy behind-the-scene tidbits like ... ooh, they had walnut raisin cream cheese at the crafts service table, and things were extra-tense between MV and JG.

Well, not really ... but that's how my memory has since transmogrified her posts ... that's the level of meaningful info I gleaned.

Considering the lack of a mod right now, on a board known for snark, Wing and Glark are making out fairly well. I think Wing was a fine mod, not perfect but certainly among the best I've seen. I lurk on many boards but I wouldn't post. The fact that Wing was able to keep them generally respectful, generally indulge the occasional off-topic postings, and deal with the egos and personalities that comprise this community speaks highly of her skill in that area. Modding can't be the most fun job, and I guess at some point you have to take a break.

I'll miss these boards and Wing's modding. The picture - totally unlike anything I imagined. But cute!

Posted by: bigcheese Mar 10, 2005 @ 10:47 pm
Wow, Glark is kinda hot. I guess they both lost lots of poundage because the last pics I saw of them were of *very* large people.

I can't totally hate on Wing because she co-created MBTV. Unfortunately, it morphed into the black hole of ass that is now TWoP. Remember the mass exodus of those boards ~two years ago? Snark used to be fun. No, really.

Anyway, goodbye Wing, bye FT forums. I shall file you under "Britches, Forums That Got Too Big For Their."

I'd like to thank TPTB for this forum. Wing, Glark, MFF? It's been a trip coming here, even if I was too paranoid to post much.

That said, I am going to miss LurkerNan and Sleestack Hunter.

Y'all take care.

I would be fine with ALL of this except the fact that she let others go for the SAME infractions. As for the Bijou thread, I didn't START the damn post with um. She was just being petty, as usual. It was like she had it out for me specifically. I even called her a control freak in an e-mail to another FT'er and I later found out that e-mail never reached that particular FT'er. See what I mean about control freakiness? The Gabriel Macht and Angelina Jolie infractions were copies of what I'd seen in other unpunished, non corrected posts. Frankyly, this board could've been fine without her. Just Glark would've been sufficient. I saw pictures of her and she's everything I thought she was. That's all I'm sayin'

Yeah, yet another way she turned into such a crappy moderator. Have strict rules, yes. But freaking enforce them universally, not get annoyed with people and ban them for shit that favourites (read: supreme butt-kissers who agree with her on absolutely everything) do all the time. Hell, some of this I know about from the people who were the favourites, who would get polite emails saying "Hey, could you look up how to do links right so I don't edit them for you?" where she would warn or ban people she didn't like for messing up tags.

Go http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6970010/ to see Wing in action. Click on the box that says "Oscar Predictions." It's a video of her and Sars "debating" crap about the Oscars. It's pretty lame, but you get to see Wing talk. Totally not how I pictured her.

Posted by: Fruitcake Mar 10, 2005 @ 11:24 pm
Well I emailed Wing prior to joining the forums to ask her why she didn't offer autographed copies of her book on FT. She took the time to email me back. I found her to be very friendly. I never had a prob with her at all.

I did get warned by Sars once for what was intended to be a joke, but was taken as a bitchy comment. I was all hurt because I knew it was meant in good humour, but I didn't go whining about it. Besides that the rules say not to email them about your warnings. Did I find this to be a little on the Castro side? Yeah, but whatever. It's their country.

I enjoyed the forums for the short time I was here. My wife loves this place. She's all bummed that she is away on assignment and has no internet access at the moment. So Wing, if you are reading this, Loopy Writer says thanks.

FluffyStuff was.....to use a term we called people in jr high....a poser. She would change her story depending on who she was talking too. And anyone who asks people to call their boyfriend "Lord anything" has serious issues. I'm just saying.

She wasn't banned, she was worried about the fucking crazies in the Varan and Garner threads hunting her down. Those people were fucking scary.

Actually the people Fluffy claimed to be worried about were people that were posting her real name and picture on another website. (People who are not Alias fans at all and are the ones calling those fans crazy). But then she told those people she thought they were the best posters on FTer. Which is what makes her a poser.

Really? I always thought you hated her all around. This was awhile ago so I forget. But, that was the one thing I loved about the CA thread is that she seemed to have fans and haters of the number and the debates could be passionate but never really too much (well not that I really witnessed) and I think her thread was the only one that was like that. It was fun reading both sides.

Wow. I want to see the fat pictures- just for curiosity's sake. The facial hairless pic of Glark is kinda attractive, the usual goatee pictures i've seen are not.

I agree that the MSNBC articles and the content on this site is lacking in something. I always felt that Wing's writing was very affected (I'm talking even her posts) and it read like she wrote it and went back and edited and edited and edited and made sure the grammar was exactly right, then changed it again. Wow that Oscar prediction clip was scary- i guess they had no makeup people on set that day?

That's what I thought but whenever I bring it up with my shrink she tells me I have more important issues to worry about than the time I spend on an Internet message board.

And she's the one with all the fancy degrees on the wall who I give big checks to.

It doesn't mean FluffyStuff wasn't a liar or a poser.

re: twop's mass exodus

I think one poster put it best when s/he described the modding there as "attack-dog mob mentality." The pandemonium of the Buffy forums and couple/character wars, the ever-increasing bitterness/decrease in quality of the recaps (and not just Buffy's) led to much unhappiness from posters, and ultimately Sars and Wing went nutty with the banning. Many just got fed up and left by their own accord (like me). I think the final straw was when they banned Fox-whats-her-name (the lesbian) for speaking out, who was like, their #1 poster (they had user rankings back in the day) and wrote some of their recaps.

There used to be a whole thread on the downfall of MBTV/TWoP on the "Pacey Porn" boards but sadly, it's no longer up. That place was hella bitter and hee-larious. They coined the "Wing Cunt." There's still lots of resentment out there, e.g.:

http://www.insidepulse.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=35048&Main=35018
http://www.journalfen.net/community/twop_crit/

You will get loads more if you google "twop" "bitter" "joyless" and/or "sucks."

Old-school mbtv/twop users, feel free to back me up. Because you know she's gonna read this.

Undesirable?

That's what she heard. She emailed Regina (because she mostly posted in the Alias forum), and Regina never emailed back. Then she emailed Sars, because it didn't keep her from logging in, but she couldn't post. She thought it was a computer glitch. Then Sars told s-i-l to stop harrassing them; that she'd been banned for being an undesirable poster.

And to stay on topic: I loved MBTV and Fametracker and appreciate Wing et al for running them, but things fell apart after the great purge. I won't miss it.

I went to one of those and do you want to know something ironic? All we did was watch Full House. Like, four hours a day. Way before we even got a whiff of Mary-Kate's troubles. So if Glark likes Uncle Jesse, I totally recommend it.

The site itself isn't shutting down, is it? They say it's not, but people keep saying things in other threads. I'm bereft. I'm confused. I'm freaking out, man! The snozzberries taste like snozzberries...

It's fun Armchair! I wasn't going to get involved in the madness at first but it looked so fun that I said what the hell and dived in. Haven't gotten out of the pool yet!

I havent really had any words for Wing. She and I didn't really clash I was warned for a couple of things that I did wrong (accidentally) on my part. Banned for simply telling a poster "Yes I can" when they basically told me I couldn't state my opinion.

What I hate about her though? I can't stand that whenever she would warn me her comments were snotty and she called me names a couple of times. I mean wtf? I'm an adult. Don't talk to me like a child or someone you can degrade. I highly doubt she'd say half that shit to any of us if we were face to face so don't try to be a bad ass behind your fuckin warn and ban button where naturally we cannot respond back to you. And if you're going to call other people names don't get mad when people on the forum find a way to call you a cunt where you can see.

That said, I won't resort to calling her a bitch or anything now, though. Not my style.

Posted by: BlancheDeveraux Mar 11, 2005 @ 1:41 am
She ruled with an iron fist because she wanted these boards to be what she wanted them to be. Intelligent and filled with good grammar.

I wouldn't mind if Wing ruled with a consistent or impartial iron fist, but more and more she ruled by an iron fist that seemed to be sometimes be ruled by her personal likes/dislikes as opposed to the stated FAQ for the forum. And I think that that may be what some people had problems with. If Wing was stringent all around with the rules, that would be one thing, but more and more she appeared to be a little more personal in her banning and belittling or rude in her posts.

I have been a long time poster (5 years or so) on FT as Clara Bow, Chesty LaRue, Rose Nylund, etc. (I didnít change my names because of being banned but rather because I am a dufus and canít remember my password.) I must say that Iíve noticed a change in Wing's moderation style. She has always been strict- which is good imo- but in the past year-plus she has become meaner, more uneven, and belittling in her moderation. It has become more of an enviroment where posters were treated like idiots, even when they were not acting like idiots and had good, legitmate questions. It became more of a system where people could not voice legitmate concerns without the fear of being smited by the Wing god on her mountain with her staff that threw lightning bolts of banning without explanation power. I greatly appreciate that moderating is a hard, and often thankless job. But that does not mean that everyone who disagrees with the moderator about opionions on pop culture or who have questions need to be treated as though they don't have a brain in their head. Because a lot of posters here are intelligent people, and if posters are being treated more and more like they do not deserve any respect, regardless of if they have legitmate concerns or not- well then- it can take a good sense of the joy and spontanaity out of a forum.

I do not mean this as a rant. And I do not mean this as a personal attack on Wing as an indivdual. However, I do think that it is good in a forum for people to sometimes be able to have the ability to voice concerns to a mod without being treated as if she or he is a moron. Maybe I am too naive, but I think that it is good to give people the benifit of the doubt, treat them with a bit of respect as individuals, and hear them out before deciding that they are an idiot. And it seems like Wing increasingly treated people like idiots before any type of hearing out or respect entered the picture.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Wing Chun's name comes from some movie that I've forgotten the name of.

Also, I watched that MSNBC Oscar thing a week or two ago, and.... Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, y'all.

Does anyone know what happened to Camper, who did the Queer as Folk recaps? Her recaps were my favorite, and I was so bummed when she suddenly was fired, without explanation.

I was just thinking about asking the same thing. One of my favorite recaps ever was the one where Brian sees Dr. What'shisname(Michael's boyfriend) in the baths and Camper did a lap around her living room in glee. I loved her and then suddenly she was gone. So odd.

I am loving the anarchy on the FT board right now!
It's a bit like New Year's Eve at a really cool friend's house, with a party full of fantastically opinionated, interesting and self-justifying folk.

But I am still desperately sad that the Forum is closing. What will I dooo when I get home from work now?

However, I count myself among those [perhaps unposted yet?] who cravenly have hoped that the axe would not fall on the Forums until our penalty status was set to rights. Though why, I do not yet understand. I personally am limping along with a 40% rating after perpetrating 2 apparently dastardly infringements. Frankly, I can stand and can support that moderators should moderate, but really, need the operation be so bloody fascist? [Don't start me on some of the dobbers who 'reported' me for the first infringement, which was, in my case, totally unavoidable, as I live in a place where the internet connection is drastically slow, and conks out way before I've got anywhere near the 15 page read-back rule, or whatever it is. What are these people, 6 years old? I detect a strong whiff of the schoolyard bully.] And frankly, for Wing to tell me, an adult grown and not entirely unintelligent, that I have been paroled, when the penalty is arbitrarily lifted...........No, I did not care for the terminology at all. It;s offensive and not ironic.

But I will miss the Forums grievously, and yes, I too will probably not return to check out the rest of the FT site, as I don't read it now.

Posted by: tulip Mar 11, 2005 @ 4:10 am
I'm also wondering what happened to Aaron on TWoP. And Joanna, who I thought did a fantastic job with the O. C. & Survivor recaps. I thought maybe they just moved on, but did either post a goodbye?

Posted by: zbeeblebrox Mar 11, 2005 @ 4:10 am
Hi guys... I have been lurking on FT for a year now and this is my first post... I am so going to miss it :(

Posted by: mssmith Mar 11, 2005 @ 4:12 am
I just have to say, this is the most awesome thing ever. I've never been witness to an actual board meltdown and....just...wow.

And this thread is just making me happy that I've been a longtime lurker with like, 10 posts total on all of these boards (TWoP, Fametracker, Hissyfit), and I've been reading them since I was about 13, roughly over 6 years. The Iron Fist of Wing Chun had me too scared to post most of the time, but let me tell you, it is way funnier watching people get the smackdown and start flamewars when you're just an amused rubbernecker that can't get banned.

If WC, Glark, or whoever are reading this, I have to say that I have loved your forums since I began reading them, regardless of the rigid rules. Even if you guys do scare me shitless.

And everyone else in here? Y'all were awesome. Seriously, some of the funniest shit I have ever read was on these forums, and I can't ever get gossip as good as what I'd find on here anywhere else.

Posted by: merqury Mar 11, 2005 @ 4:25 am
Don't start me on some of the dobbers who 'reported' me... What are these people, 6 years old?

You know, I would ask myself that every time I visited the Troll Patrol thread. "Seems kinda rude", "Poster's tone wasn't very nice."

Hi-fuckin-larious

And frankly, for Wing to tell me, an adult grown and not entirely unintelligent, that I have been paroled, when the penalty is arbitrarily lifted...........No, I did not care for the terminology at all. It;s offensive and not ironic.

Hahahaha! I thought I was the only one. Well, what can I say...

Posted by: WickedChild Mar 11, 2005 @ 6:16 am
belittling in her moderation.

She once edited out someone's definiton of a word and replaced it with "*eyeroll*"

What a stupid, little thing to go in and actually take time to edit out.

Oh yes, I've been a bit bored by the forums lately, and this meltdown is awesome.

Posted by: swsa Mar 11, 2005 @ 8:16 am
Does it actually matter if she had a boyfriend on the set if nothing she said about what was happening on the set was true?

She actually said something specific enough for it to be not true? Why do I mostly remember..."things are a little tense but everyone's determined to be polite and keep working". Woah...I don't know that anyone wants to be stepping out on that kind of limb when it comes to the celeb gossip.

Ugh. I can't believe Wing & the other mods put up with this for so long.

Iron Chef and merqury - maybe some of your warnings/bannings were inconsistent but you know what? Your posts were fucking annoying.

Yes, the FT elite could be arrogant and clique-y. They were also a talented and intelligent group of posters. More importantly, there were plenty of other folks who did just fine with the established rules.

Good riddance.

Posted by: HeatherJ Mar 11, 2005 @ 8:54 am
I was afraid of her too. My feelings on it are that she ran the sight so if she wanted to bitch you out or ban you that was her right. I got kinda warned and didn't post for weeks in fear she would actually ban me.

I've always wondered what happened to Aaron at TVoP. I hope he's not locked in a basement somewhere...

Dear Wing Chun:

I'll never forget the time you snatched my George W. Bush thread offline or when you threatend me because I had accidently started a duplicate thread. Thanks for all the memories.

Sincerely yours,

Anyone else notice how, when Wing would post on a thread, people would clammor over what she said for the next, like, 10 pages? She'd get "word"ed and quoted and commented on for every one line post that would get ignored if anyone else wrote it.

Anyway, I've lurked since back when TWOP was Dawson's Wrap, but I don't post much. Too scared of gettin the smackdown.
Till now! This is the most fun ever.

Posted by: Tehanu Mar 11, 2005 @ 9:53 am
I am torn between my appreciation for two years of posting fun and my inherent need to be rude when I have the chance.

I think Wing is a great moderator. I don't know what went on behind the scenes, but the forum content was (until now) always top quality. The fact that so many users actually helped out with patrolling the site in the troll patrol thread goes to show how much we all appreciated posting in an intelligent environment, free from emoticons and stupid signatures. I also moderate for a living and I honestly couldn't be bothered to be as strict as she is, even though it would probably create a better end product. I don't have the energy it takes to deal with the non-stop criticism from users and don't blame her if that contributed to the end of the forums.

However.

The Man From Funkle is hands down the best contributor to this site's non-forum content. His articles are unceasingly funny and intelligent. Wing's, not so much. I always get the sense that she's trying too hard to be as cool and irreverent as the other writers. In fact, a lot of the regular posters in the forums consistently make observations that are far more clever and humourous than anything she's produced. I heartily agree with the statement that many of her (their?) ideas come from these forums. She's also pretty rude and condescending towards some of the users. Without us, this site wouldn't exist. So yeah, I'm grateful for the fun I've had, but let's not forget that they should be grateful for US for hanging around so long.

In short, thanks for the laughs and consider purchasing some cosmetics. Translucent powder can work wonders!

Posted by: magazinewhore Mar 11, 2005 @ 9:55 am
I think Wing was strict but fair, but she needed to be. How many other stupid boards disintegrate into sheer paris hilton vs. lindsay lohan-level stupidity without that kind of discipline.

Wing and Glark rock. Loved the site. Loved the forums. Already having withdrawal symptoms.

Ain't most of us, though? I'll freely admit Posting Anxiety on numerous occasions. Y'all're SMRT, as Homer Simpson would say!

Sure, some of the rules were harsh and intimidating and could be perceived as not fair, but hey, we knew what we were getting into when we posted here, and we always had a choice to leave on our own. I like this place for a reason: because most of the stupid (((((((((HUGS!)))))))) and gifs and smileys and YER JUS' JELLUS crap was unwelcome, and we could focus on (relatively) intelligent discussion of stuff.

Frankly, I don't know how Wing and Glark did this job as long as they did. I sure as hell couldn't've!

Control?! You never had control! I was overwhelmed by the power of this place. So I made a mistake too. I didn't have enough respect for that power, and it's out now. You're sitting here trying to pick up the pieces. There's nothing worth picking up. The only thing that matters now are the people we love. Other posters? They're out there where people are dying - - people are dying, you know?!?

Um...watching too much Jurassic Park it seems. Yup, Fametracker is dying but my love for movies still stands strong!

That happens all the time on TWoP as well. It's so fucking annoying that everything a recapper says is like the word of god and no dissent is allowed. Someone linked upthread to a discussion of Pamie's Gilmore Girls recaps and they are a prime example of this. The same fan-girly behavior that can be criticized about a show or celebrity is actively encouraged about the recappers and mods.
Does anyone from TWoP's old Sex and the City forums remember a fight between Alex Richmond and Gustave versus a poster who of course, ended up getting banned because of it? He wrote an extremely reasoned and well-thought out post criticizing Alex's recap that included a sexual fantasy of hers that he found offensive and out of place in a recap. I've always remembered it because Alex and Gustave just killed this guy and his post was not in the least bit rude.
There was also an incident here, I can't remember which Celebrity thread it was, when one poster mentioned the celebrity's FA (meaning Fame Audit) and another poster asked what an FA was. Wing wrote something snotty like, "I'm so glad people bother to read what we write" or something like that. I always felt bad for that poster because he/she clearly just didn't make the connection and was just asking a simple question.
In general, I think the forums were (and are , in the case of TWoP) pretty well run, but stuff like that gets harder and harder to ignore.

Tehanu, I would totally be as strict as Wing is, but our mod powers have come to resemble being slapped with a wet haddock. Lightly. Which is why the boards I mod are shiiiiiit, and I hate everyone on them bar one or two posters (out of thousands). As, I suspect, do most mods.

I just assumed this was a funding decision, but now thinking of it? Even if the board were free and the moderation free, the sheer hate mail volume is enough to say "fuck 'em". Imagine coming in in the morning, and there's no vitriol in your inbox! Nothing demanding explanation... no, further explanation... no, more explanation, because "I don't accept your decision". No one insulting your family, threatening to follow you home from the office and "teach you what fear really is" (no joke), constantly campaigning to either sue or fire you... Ah, delightful.

The only thing that matters now are the people we love. Other posters? They're out there where people are dying - - people are dying, you know?!?

They were totally right to stop that conversation; it was better-off in email, and was pitting a poster (and that poster's specific personal experience) against a recapper. If it'd been between two posters, the mods would've cracked down on that, too. TWoP is to talk about the show, not dissect the morals and PC-ness of a certain writer -- that shit's for email. Pretty clear to me.

I remember way back when these forums started, I think I came to FT from Chickclick? For you youngins, there was once a forum dedicated to nominating "Hey It's That Guy!" You know, I may not have liked Wing Chun per say, or disliked her, but I like her work. Hissyfit, MBTV(TWoP) and Fametracker have been great sites to play with.

So thanks Wing and Glark!

ETA: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I sound like a fucking cheerleader. It's official, I'm turning into my overly perky mother.

I kid, I kid. Seriously though? This?

Go here to see Wing in action. Click on the box that says "Oscar Predictions." It's a video of her and Sars "debating" crap about the Oscars.

Michael Moore,Harry Potter, Mary Lou Retton so it's only fair to throw in Peter Pan and Lucy from the Littles too.

If you were Wing, and you saw a thread with your name on it on FameTracker, would you click on it?

I would you know it wouldn't surprise me if Glark did too. In my opinion Wing was never fair that word should never be associated with her. She was a hypocrite and I found her to be really nasty at times especially when some posters didn't seen things her way.

Jesus, people. I think we're seeing exactly why you were warned/banned. I've posted on all three WC/G boards -- the late lamented Hissyfit boards, the almost gone FT boards, and TWoP -- since '98, and I've never gotten a warning. The closest I've gotten was on Hissyfit when I decided to join a discussion on drug use, and Wing politely asked us to not discuss illegal substances. Basically, I respected other posters and used capitalization/a semblance of grammar AND read other posts before posting.

My point? I think Wing and Glark did a fabulous job, the current state of the boards Exhibit A. I was glad to go somewhere on the internet wthout those annoying ass smilies, some nice design work, intelligent posters, and freedom from trolls.

Enjoy trashing the boards, freaks.
